SEAGROVE POTTERY TOUR

Nestled in the countryside of North Carolina you will find the largest concentration of working potters in the United States. Enjoy your day on a self guided driving tour down some of North Carolina’s scenic byways. Within a 20 mile radius there are over 50 pottery shops to visit. Set your own pace as you go from shop to shop. You’ll most likely be greeted by the potters themselves. Seagrove offers a range of pottery, from functional everyday use, contemporary, sculptural, folk art, to historical forms from the past. Make plans to spend a day or two to discover Seagrove and experience the diversity of North Carolina pottery.

Seagrove's legacy began with diverse clay deposits used by Native Americans for ceremonial and functional art. These early pieces remain vital cultural artifacts.
EUROPEAN INFLUENCES
In the late 1700s, English and German settlers arrived via the Great Wagon Road, drawn to the region's rich clay. They initially crafted redware before transitioning to high-fired salt-glazed stoneware by the mid-19th century.
A GROWING REPUTATION
The construction of the Plank Road and the arrival of the railroad expanded market access, solidifying Seagrove as a renowned pottery hub. Farmer-potters blended tradition with artistic vision to create unique styles. Today, these historic pots are celebrated globally as cultural treasures rather than mere tools.
