WOOD FIRE
The largest pottery studio in the Southeast and one of the largest in the United States, the Morean Center for Clay is located in a historic freight train depot in the Warehouse Arts District of St. Petersburg. The Center is home to more than 50 studios of ceramic artists creating functional and non-functional clay art.
Firing a wood-fired kiln is a community-driven, multi-day ceramic process that reaches peak temperatures around 2,300°F to 2,400°F (Cone 9–10). It requires continuous manual wood stoking, shifting oxidation and reduction atmospheres, and a slow cooling period of several days. Gathering to fire a wood-fired pottery kiln is a communal, hands-on ritual. It requires a dedicated shift crew to chop and stage seasoned wood, pack the firebox, monitor temperature cones, and take turns stoking the fire round-the-clock over 12 hours to several days
We will be leading a group to Saint Petersburg Florida to the Morean clay center for a full week of loading firing and unloading the anagama kiln. Each participant will have the oppurtunity to bring work that fits a 12 square foot cubic space. This woodfire kiln takes 3 days to fire and is fueled by stoking wood into the stoke holes. This will require teams to rotate thoughout the firing process untill we reach our expected tempetures. We are not in a hurry and the fire is in control.
